Steve Hayes is the Sr. Partner and Founder of The Human Capital Group. He has 20+ years of broad-based, multi-industry, and global experience as a human resources executive, with specific skills in guiding leaders and their companies in the following capacities: acquiring high potential talent; cultural change; developing and aligning vision, mission, and values; organizational and management development; performance management and succession planning; domestic and international start-ups and shut-downs; and union management and avoidance.
As a retained executive recruiter, Steve has assisted executives in acquiring leadership talent within virtually every function and industry sector. In addition, he is a sought-after consultant and executive coach to leaders facing a myriad of organizational and cultural challenges and opportunities.

Nancy Reece is an integrity fanatic, passionate about helping people know the right thing to do and then DOING the right thing. She intuitively knows how to challenge and coach people to make a powerful impact as leaders, while creating a warm, transparent, and open atmosphere for learning and growth. As Senior Consultant with The Human Capital Group, Nancy specializes in values-based leadership consulting that produces cultures of accountability, courage, and trust.
Prior to joining The Human Capital Group, Nancy was the first woman elected National Board Chair of the Association of YMCA Professionals in its 130-year history. Her career includes service as Senior Vice President for the YMCA of Middle Tennessee and National Consultant for YMCA of the USA. Nancy is also the Founder and Director of Pastoral Leadership Academy, a 2-year experience for church leaders that builds relationship and leadership.
As adjunct faculty, she teaches Leadership and Organizational Behavior at Lipscomb University’s Graduate Business School. Nancy is a talented writer and has authored the book The Dichotomy of Power® - Using Power with Intelligence and Integrity and co-authored/edited the book Strengthening the Organizational Heart. She is the “Integrity First” columnist for the Nashville Business Journal.
She earned her BS degree from the University of Evansville and her MS degree from Indiana University. She has continued her lifelong learning at Harvard University and the Center for Creative Leadership.
Paul DePhillips, Senior Consultant, has 26 years in leadership positions ranging from major manufacturing companies to starting and growing his own business. He has led many different departments and facilities over the course of his career, which culminated in his last position as SVP of Plant Operations for American Color. In this position, one of Paul’s primary responsibilities and greatest passion was to acquire and develop the right talent into the right positions for maximum company and employee benefit. He understands the value of matching great talent to the personality of the company in search of that talent.

Paul received his BS degree in Business Administration from the University of Kansas.
Tom joined The Human Capital Group, Inc., in 2007 as Strategy Consultant, bringing with him over 20 years’ experience in leadership roles with high-growth organizations. Serving as Vice President Division Merchandise Manager, and later as Vice President of Supply Chain Management at Tractor Supply Company (NASDAQ: TSCO), Tom developed and led teams through the largest expansion phase in the company’s 70+ year history to become the leading farm chain retailer in America. His areas of expertise are long-term strategic planning, organizational development, and new business ventures. Tom has extensive experience in retail merchandising, negotiations, and supply chain strategies. Prior to his 12 years at TSC, he served Green Seed and Three-D of Music City, Inc., in the roles of Buyer and Director of Operations, respectively.
Tom is a past member of the Retail Industry Leaders Association, Supply Chain Leaders Council. Tom earned his BS degree from the University of Alabama, where he was a member of the Beta Beta Beta honor society.
Tom is engaged in his community—serving or having served in the following capacities: Past Board Chair of the Brentwood Family YMCA, volunteer high school instructor for Junior Achievement, past President of the Middle Tennessee Alabama Alumni Association, and participant in multiple Habitat for Humanity builds.
In any position held or business venture undertaken, Mary Beth believes that the hallmark to success is building strong relationships that will maximize client satisfaction, promote goodwill, generate repeat business, and create an atmosphere where all parties are valued and benefit from the process. As Director, Business Operations, for The Human Capital Group, she looks forward each day to incorporating that philosophy into the day-to-day business operations of the company.
Mary Beth spent the majority of her career in the pharmaceutical and healthcare field, as Senior Advertising Specialist at Pharmacia & Upjohn — a member of a creative and tactical team that produced award-winning advertising, educational, and promotional materials for five therapeutic classes of ethical products. Additionally, she owned a communications business that supported several healthcare clients, including Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Wyeth, and Hospice of SW Michigan, as well as municipal entities and various other nonprofit and for-profit business organizations. These opportunities served to sharpen strong customer relations skills.
Mary Beth earned a BA in Management and Behavioral Science, from Nazareth College, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and a 4-year Specialty Certification in Public Relations, Advertising, and Marketing through the American Medical Writers Association. She has served in her community as a workshop facilitator in the areas of grief recovery and marriage building, as a crisis counselor for a residential treatment center, and as a crisis intervention trainer.
As Recruiting Manager for The Human Capital Group, Jamie’s focus is on leading the Research and Recruiting team in finding outstanding candidates for mid- to senior-level management positions. She finds herself humbled by this position and experiences great fulfillment in the duality of directing the efforts of the team to discover top-talent candidates while assisting those candidates in pursuing new opportunities for their lives.
Jamie holds both a Master of Arts degree in Christian Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Bachelor of Science degree from Baylor University.
Prior to joining The Human Capital Group, Jamie was an admissions counselor for Central Baptist College in Conway, Arkansas. Additionally, she served for seven summers with Centrifuge Christian Camps as a Bible study leader and recreation director. She has a passion for youth and college students and loves to minister to them through adventure recreation and the outdoors.
Mark is a results-driven Recruiting Associate with The Human Capital Group who is dedicated to delivering excellence in talent acquisition. He has 12+ years in the recruiting business, partnering with an array of companies—from localized boutique firms to global Fortune 100 leaders— to help them achieve and exceed their growth goals. Mark’s knowledge of the intricacies of recruiting and his passion to help others arm him with a professional/personal balance in his approach that is the hallmark of successful recruiting.
Prior to joining the Human Capital Group, Mark recruited high-level financial advisors and planners for such firms as Ameriprise, New York Life, AXA, Prudential, MetLife, Lincoln, Northwestern Mutual, and Merrill Lynch. He has recruited independently through his own firm as well as on the corporate side of the financial services industry.
Adrienne serves the mission of The Human Capital Group as a Recruiting Associate. She is dedicated to researching and delivering exceptional candidates to assist our clients with optimum talent acquisition outcomes.
Adrienne spent the first part of her career as an attorney at Baker & Hostetler, LLP, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Washington, DC. She specialized in employment & labor litigation and complex business litigation. Adrienne also served as an executive director, in Cleveland, Ohio, for the Children's Defense Fund's Freedom Schools program, a holistic academic enrichment program promoting civic engagement, leadership development, proper nutrition, and mental and physical health.
Adrienne earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of Cincinnati College of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. She has actively volunteered in the communities in which she has lived in the following ways: at schools, including Ross Elementary, in Nashville; as a nutrition and physical fitness consultant to various community groups and her church; and by arranging presentations and panel discussions to assist student organizations across the country with law school admissions and career development.
As a Recruiting Associate with The Human Capital Group, Penny Oates welcomes the opportunity to assist companies in finding the perfect person for the job. She loves the interaction with the candidates and enjoys helping them throughout the entire process.
Penny holds a Bachelors degree in Health Education & Marketing from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Penny has 18 years experience in strategic planning and marketing in the healthcare industry. She has been a member of The Georgia Hospital Association, The Alliance for Healthcare Strategy and Marketing and the National Association of Women’s Health Professionals. Penny participated in the 1995 Leadership Augusta Class and was the Chairperson of the Leadership Augusta Class of 1996.
John Steiner, as a Senior Consultant, brings great depth and varied business experience as he provides leadership and direction for The Human Capital Group's South Carolina office. He is a seasoned business executive with more than 35 years of leadership and talent acquisition experience for several major corporations, including his most recent service as President of Kalco Lighting in Las Vegas, Nevada. Prior to Kalco, John held various executive positions with MagneTek, Inc, culminating in the role of President of their lighting group in Nashville, Tennessee. He also held key executive positions with Westinghouse Electric and Sylvania Lighting International.
John is the former Chairman of the Davidson County American Heart Association, and he served on the Board of Directors of the Southern Region of the American Heart Association. John was a Regent of the Milwaukee School of Engineering, a member of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, a member of the National Association of Electrical Distributors, and a member of the American Lighting Association's Manufacturer's Steering Committee.
John earned his BS degree and an MBA degree from the University of Dayton. He also received advanced executive training at the University of Southern California.
